AFLSE Party
I went to the Alumni and Friends of The LSE "Bon Voyage" party near Times Square Wednesday night. Originally scheduled for two weeks ago, it was postponed by the "Great Power Failure of 2003." I learned a few things about The School (still a bit Socialist, lots of departmental independence, very loyal and connected alum). I met someone who lived at Great Dover last year, and will be back this year. I got some tips about the neighborhood, stores, buses, requesting a larger room (which I already did). The building is only 5 or 6 years old - but the windows still only open from the top. Another regular occurence at the party was the reaction when I met new people. Only one (the oldest guy in the room) mentioned my age - he thought I was a fellow alum. But after reading my name tag, the normal response was, "Operational Research? Whoa!" I guess I'll have to wait to see if this was a compliment, or a warning.
